And when we talk about Git, we can’t help but think of GitHub, the largest and most well-known open-source software platform today.

However, for many private companies or small to mid-sized teams, GitHub may not be an option due to security, cost, deployment strategies, or regulatory requirements. In such cases, what tools can serve as an internal Git repository platform? The most common choices include GitLab and Gitea, which is the focus of this article.

For some teams, Gitea might still be relatively unfamiliar. Bitbucket Data Center’s enterprise license is also far from cheap, often limiting cross‑department adoption and slowing collaboration efforts.

By contrast, the licensing model of Gitea Enterprise is far more flexible. With high‑volume license purchases, the cost per account can be reduced to under USD 10. For large organizations, this cost difference is substantial and significantly lowers the barrier to collaboration.

🚀 CI/CD Was the Biggest Reason for Our Migration

The most critical factor that influenced our team’s decision to move away from Bitbucket Data Center was the usability and flexibility of the CI/CD ecosystem. In modern development workflows, if a Git platform lacks an autonomous, easy‑to‑manage, and extensible CI/CD system, it’s almost like losing both arms and legs — development efficiency suffers tremendously.

Although Bitbucket has its own CI/CD product, Bamboo, it comes with notable drawbacks:

  • Workflow design that does not align with IaC (Infrastructure as Code) principles
  • High resistance when promoting it across teams, as complicated tools reduce adoption willingness

For teams fully embracing automation and IaC, Bamboo becomes a bottleneck rather than an enabler.
